In simple terms, barbershop harmony is vocal harmony produced by four parts: lead, tenor, baritone and bass. Barbershop harmony is sung unaccompanied by instruments (a cappella).
Finding the right part for your voice is the initial step. Any woman of average singing ability, with or without vocal training, will find a part that fits her range.
Performances and competitions develop members’ confidence and pride in their achievements and help perpetuate barbershop music – one of a few forms of music native to the United States.
Sweet Adelines promotes harmony, friendship, self-esteem and a sense of belonging among women of all ages, races, ethnic backgrounds and levels of performance readiness.
Sweet Adelines’ Young Women in Harmony is an outreach program for secondary school through college level voices. Member-developed student songbooks, educator’s guides, videotapes and audio cassettes are provided gratis.
